The word 'dingbat' began as a colloquial term for anything you didn't know the name of, similar to 'thingamajig.' According to Allan Haley, Director of Words and Letters for Monotype Imaging, 'the word 'dingbat' was given to symbols and sorts by 19th-century printers. It was easier to say 'dingbat' than ornaments, sorts, borders, logos, pointers, etc.' |
